Bangladesh Death Toll From Dengue Rises, Unlikely to Ease Before December
Health officials said more than 133,000 people were hospitalized as repeat infections, delayed treatment and mosquito breeding sites fueled the surge.
Bangladesh recorded 418 dengue deaths in 2026 as of October 30, with October emerging as the deadliest month after accounting for 173 fatalities.
Changing rainfall and humidity patterns linked to climate change have extended mosquito breeding seasons and kept Aedes mosquitoes active longer, sustaining transmission.
At Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital in Dhaka, 279 patients are under treatment following 67 new admissions. Director Mirza Golam Sarwar noted, "We are getting many patients in shock. Their blood pressure is sometimes too low to measure, and their oxygen levels are dropping."
The dengue surge compounds a concurrent measles outbreak that has killed more than 1,200 people, placing intense strain on healthcare resources. Medicine specialist ABM Abdullah noted repeat infections and diagnostic delays drive severe outcomes.
Entomologist Kabirul Bashar of Jahangirnagar University expects transmission to persist through November. "We may see some relief, but dengue is unlikely to disappear in November," Bashar said, noting significant improvement remains unlikely before December.
