Bangladesh court sentences exiled opposition leader to 9 years in jail on corruption charges
- Tarique Rahman, son and heir apparent of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has been sentenced to nine years in prison by a court in Bangladesh. The sentence was delivered in absentia as Rahman has been in self-imposed exile since 2008 and is currently leading the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party from London.
- Rahman's wife, Zubaida Rahman, was also sentenced to three years in prison in absentia. The opposition party has rejected the verdict, claiming it is politically motivated to keep Rahman out of politics.
