Banff Entrance Sign Will Soon Have a New Home

BANFF NATIONAL PARK, CANADA, AUG 5 – The entrance sign will be moved to reduce safety risks for tourists taking selfies, improving visitor experience and reducing accidents, park officials said.

  • The well-known $350,000 "Banff" sign, first erected in 2017 along Mount Norquay Avenue, is scheduled to be relocated to the Banff Train Station area in October 2025.
  • Town officials decided to relocate the sign to improve pedestrian and traffic safety after many tourists illegally parked and crossed the busy two-lane Mount Norquay Avenue.
  • The new site at the train station, about 600 metres away, offers a green space next to free parking and will be unveiled at a ceremony in October.
  • Adam and Jan Waterous, who own the Banff Railway Lands and Mt. Norquay Ski Resort, are covering the $1.2 million expense to relocate and reinstall the Banff sign. Jan expressed excitement about placing the sign at the Train Station as part of this project.
  • The relocation aims to reduce traffic congestion and complement efforts to restore the railway lands as Banff's gateway, while the Alberta government studies possible passenger rail options between Calgary and Banff.
