Nigeria: Bandits Abduct 50 Zamfara Elders During 'Reconciliation Meeting' Inside Forest

Eleven villagers have been freed, while 39 remain captive after the bandit leader demanded N24 million for three seized rifles, officials said.

  • Bandits abducted 50 elderly residents of Magamin Diddi village in Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State, while on an unauthorized reconciliation mission. The victims remain held by bandit kingpin Jammo, who operates from the nearby Muntsira Forest.
  • Maradun Local Government Chairman Hon. Bello Dosara confirmed the residents pursued the mission without government clearance. "We are against reconciliation with the bandits and Governor Dauda Lawal never supported that, but unknown to us the people chose to go on with it," Dosara said.
  • Magami/Faru ward Councilor Bello Husseini confirmed 11 villagers were released while 39 remain captive. Husseini noted the kingpin demanded N24 million for three rifles, stating, "The people he held hostage were elderly and he had no reason to hold them hostage."
  • Calling for military intervention, the council chairman and Councilor Husseini demanded an offensive against Dajin Natsira, citing previous clashes with the security outfit Askarawa. They argued bandits operating there have never faced sustained military confrontation in Zamfara State.
  • Previously, the bandit kingpin requested reconciliation after a fighter was killed in Kandare, despite continued attacks on Askarawa personnel. Officials emphasize bandits remain untrustworthy, regardless of recent diplomatic attempts.
