Ballots Cast on Election Day in B.C. Will Be Counted by Hand, Elections BC Says
Elections BC says the change will slow results, with more than 2 million ballots expected across the province.
Elections officials confirmed that ballots cast on Final Voting Day will be counted by hand, a departure from 2024 when electronic tabulators were used for the first time in a general election.
Shortened time frames and complex operational logistics of this snap election prompted the decision to return to manual counting, despite 2024 electronic tabulators reporting 59 per cent of preliminary results within half an hour.
While Final Voting Day ballots are manually tallied, Elections officials will use electronic tabulators for votes cast in Advance polling, where more than 891,000 votes were cast from Friday to Wednesday, down more than 11 per cent compared to 2024.
Royal Roads University associate professor David Black notes that hand counting will yield slower Results but may increase public trust, as voters often feel more confident in manual counting than electronic tabulation.
Results reported on election night will exclude absentee and mail-in ballots, which Elections officials will tally at the final count scheduled between Nov. 6 to 10, with over 2 million ballots expected in total across British Columbia.
