Ballots become battlegrounds for voting rules, redistricting, election power

More than one-third of state ballot measures appearing across the country this year focus on democracy, covering voting rights, election processes, and redistricting issues.
Legislators in Florida and Missouri are attempting to limit citizen-led ballot initiatives, while redistricting fights intensify following pressure from President Donald Trump on Republican-led states.
As of March 31, 83 measures have already qualified for ballots nationwide, with 31 focusing on democracy and another 341 currently in the process of qualifying.
Crowded ballots featuring competing citizen-led and legislative proposals may confuse voters, said Chris Melody Fields Figueredo, executive director at the Ballot Initiative Strategy Center.
Next week, Virginians will vote on temporary redistricting authority for Congress, while Nevada and North Carolina voters consider constitutional amendments requiring photo identification for voting.
