Newborn could have 'irreversible brain damage' following overdose at Glasgow hospital

  • Eight-Week-Old Zohan Ul Hassan, born on January 24th seven weeks premature, was admitted to the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow for hernia surgery at the beginning of March, after initially being diagnosed at six weeks old at Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock.
  • Zohan's hernia surgery was performed, and he was discharged, but his stomach began to swell again a week later, leading to a scheduled second surgery on March 18 to repair another hernia on his right side.
  • During the second surgery, medical staff mistakenly administered 200mg of paracetamol instead of the required 20mg, leading to Zohan being given acetylcysteine, an antidote, and his condition rapidly deteriorated with convulsions and a skyrocketing heart rate, prompting his transfer to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit and placement on a ventilator.
  • Ahad Ul Hassan, Zohan's father, recounted his son's distress, stating, "When I got there Zohan's heart rate was sky-high, going over 200 beats per minute, he was trying to cry but his voice wouldn't let him," while also expressing the family's devastation: "It's heartbreaking- it's just a horrible thing to go through with our baby," and their loss of faith in the NHS.
  • Zohan is currently unconscious and on life support with swelling on the brain, and doctors have warned Ahad and Hira that he may have irreversible brain damage and vision problems, while NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde have launched a full investigation and apologized to the family, stating, "We are continuing to deliver the best possible care for Zohan and we continue to offer support to his family at this distressing time.
