Federal investigators are tracing more than 100 suspicious letters and packages as election offices in several states evacuate and stock up on safety supplies.
- On Thursday, the FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced they are investigating "suspicious mailings" sent to election and congressional offices nationwide, warning the contents could be "potentially hazardous."
- Election offices in Louisiana and Oklahoma evacuated Tuesday after receiving packages containing "suspicious white powder," while U.S. Postal Service investigators intercepted a similar mailing intended for Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose.
- The National Association of Secretaries of State and the National Association of State Election Directors condemned the incidents, stating threats against election staff have "no place in our democracy."
- Congressional offices were also targeted, prompting the Senate Sergeant at Arms to notify Senate staff Thursday while House officials monitor the investigation as it widens.
- John Cohen, a former acting undersecretary for intelligence and analysis at the Department of Homeland Security, told CNN the threat is "rapidly evolving, dynamic, technologically enabled and dangerous" as these incidents echo 2023 and 2024 patterns.
