B&M Fined £2m After Mouse Infestation Runs Rampant in Three Stores
Inspectors found mouse droppings, gnawed food and contamination at three stores, and Birmingham Magistrates' Court ordered B&M to pay costs and a surcharge.
On July 13, Birmingham Magistrates' Court fined B&M Retail Ltd £2 million for food hygiene offenses after the retailer pleaded guilty to violations identified across three Birmingham stores.
Environmental health inspectors uncovered rodent activity at St Andrews Retail Park, Priory Square Shopping Centre, and The Fort Shopping Park, prompting the council to issue Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notices and close all three locations.
At The Fort, officers discovered mouse droppings in close proximity to children's toys, while Priory Square showed urine contamination on food packaging. B&M admitted that while procedures existed, "those procedures were not followed."
Councillor Sam Forsyth, Chair of the Licensing and Public Protection Committee, stated the £2 million penalty "reflects the seriousness of the offences." B&M must pay £18,104 in prosecution costs and a £2,000 victim surcharge within 28 days.
The company insisted it "remains fully committed to meeting high standards of food safety," implementing comprehensive action to strengthen controls, including new digital monitoring processes and more frequent pest-control contractor visits.
