Award-winning UK wine merchant to close after 59 years as it enters administration
The family-run merchant is offering discounts of up to 60% as joint administrators wind down the business.
On July 3, joint administrators William Antony Batty and Hugh Francis Jesseman were appointed to oversee Friarwood Wine and Spirits after the 59-year-old merchant fell into administration.
Founded in 1967, the family-run business maintained close relationships with prestigious vineyards in Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, and Tuscany, supplying Michelin-starred restaurants, top hotels, and private members' clubs.
Friarwood is holding a "Closing Down Sale" with discounts of up to 60% on products, with remaining fine wines and spirits available through its website or London-based store in Parsons Green, Fulham.
The closure follows a difficult year for the retail sector, with competitors Jones and Leading Labels entering administration and luxury holiday company Salamander Voyages ceasing trading.
Despite widespread closures, major brands including Aldi and Superdrug have announced new store openings for 2026, while retailers like Bodycare and Evans have recently returned to the high street.
