Lockheed Martin and Avio Announce Strategic Cooperation Agreement for Solid Rocket Motor Production
Avio USA will invest more than $500 million and build a Virginia plant to supply motors for Lockheed Martin missiles and ease a domestic chokepoint.
On Tuesday, Lockheed Martin and Avio announced a strategic cooperation agreement to produce solid rocket motors in the U.S., with Avio USA CEO James Syring calling the deal "a major milestone."
Solid rocket motors have historically been a chokepoint due to industry consolidation that left only two domestic providers; Avio, a longtime European producer, is bringing global propulsion expertise to the U.S. market.
Avio is investing over $500M in a 900,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Hurt, Virginia, scheduled to begin building motors in 2029 and leveraging access to skilled trade workers.
This collaboration provides Lockheed a second motor source for the Precision Strike Missile and Extended Range GMLRS , ensuring flexibility and surety of supply for accelerating production.
Avio is engineering Mk104 solid rocket motors for Raytheon's Standard Missile family, while CEO James Syring noted the company will train U.S. staff in Italy for three to four months.
Lockheed Martin and Italy's Avio have signed an agreement to collaborate on the production of solid-fuel rocket motors. The motors for the ER GMLRS and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), which arm the HIMARS launcher, are to be manufactured at Avio USA's new factory in Virginia. The collaboration aims to increase the availability of the motors and accelerate production of both types of munitions.
