AA Issues Warning to Drivers as Petrol Prices Soar 8p in Less than a Month
AA says wholesale fuel costs are feeding through to pumps as 11 towns and cities still offer petrol at least 10p below the UK average.
The average price of petrol has reached 170.54p a litre, while diesel has climbed to 192.86p, according to RAC data, making a family car fill-up cost nearly £5 more than at the start of September.
Escalating military conflict in the Middle East has driven crude oil trades above 100 dollars a barrel, causing petrol prices to rise by more than 8p a litre across the UK since September began.
Luke Bosdet, the AA's spokesman on pump prices, questioned why competitive retailers charge £80 less to refuel a Transit-type van compared to the UK average, highlighting extreme regional disparities.
Fuel Finder helps consumers locate cheaper stations, with Bosdet arguing this consumer power can break "the stranglehold of postcode lottery high pump prices" if drivers use it strategically.
Cheaper fuel is available in 11 towns and cities across England, Scotland, and Wales, excluding Costco sites, while Scotland remains the most expensive region and Northern Ireland recorded the largest recent rise.
