Waymo Gets the Green Light to Start Offering Driverless Taxi Service in San Jose
On May 19, 2025, Waymo received regulatory authorization to begin commercial operations of its autonomous taxi fleet throughout much of San Jose.
This approval follows earlier permits from the California DMV and reflects Waymo’s efforts to expand beyond San Francisco and Silicon Valley Peninsula into the South Bay.
Waymo currently operates driverless rides for paying customers across several cities including San Francisco, Mountain View, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, with plans for phased expansion in the Bay Area.
Mayor Matt Mahan expressed enthusiasm about the arrival of autonomous vehicles in San Jose, while Waymo emphasized that their service expansion will proceed gradually without immediate changes to current operations.
This permit sets the stage for gradual deployment that could improve safety and accessibility in San Jose, though effects on local traffic congestion remain uncertain.
