- Toyota Motor Corporation plans to join the fuel cell joint venture Cellcentric as an equal partner alongside Volvo Group and Daimler Truck, following a nonbinding memorandum announced on Tuesday, March 31.
- Complementing Volvo and Daimler Truck's established commercial engineering, Toyota contributes over 30 years of fuel cell expertise from passenger vehicles to accelerate hydrogen technology for heavy-duty transport applications.
- Cellcentric currently employs more than 560 people in Germany and Canada and holds roughly 700 fuel cell patents, operating as an independent entity focused on scaling hydrogen systems.
- Managing Director and CTO Nicholas Loughlan said, "Toyota intends to join as a shareholder of Cellcentric," calling it a sign of trust from one of the world's leading automotive companies.
- Although the three companies will continue to compete independently in their respective businesses, they aim to create critical mass for decarbonizing heavy transport through shared fuel cell development.
