Author Amy Griffin sues woman who alleged she stole her stories of sexual abuse in memoir 'The Tell'
Griffin says the classmate’s claims about her memoir are false and filed a federal defamation suit after the woman sued in California.
On Monday, author Amy Griffin filed a defamation lawsuit asserting that allegations she appropriated sexual abuse stories for her 2025 memoir 'The Tell' are false in every element.
The legal action follows claims in a New York Times story and the woman's own lawsuit alleging Griffin stole sexual abuse stories, causing the accuser to feel 'violated all over again.'
Griffin claims she has not spoken to the woman in more than 35 years, and her 2020 writings and 2021 Amarillo Police Department interview prove her account predates the alleged theft.
The New York Times stands by its reporting, stating it engaged extensively with legal representatives, while the accuser said Griffin uses her 'immense wealth and influence to try and silence me.'
Griffin's lawsuit further alleges the woman falsely claimed to be 'Claudia,' a pseudonym from 'The Tell,' and criticizes the Times for having 'deemed the story too good to scrutinize' despite warnings.
