Austronesian Boat Sets Sail on Epic Voyage From Taiwan to Philippines

The 20-seat canoe was built by six Orchid Island communities and is carrying about 60 people on a 24-hour voyage, organizers said.

  • On Monday, indigenous Tao rowers from Orchid Island, Taiwan, departed in a traditional wooden canoe for the Philippines' Batanes Islands, reviving a maritime route dormant for 300 years.
  • Syaman Maraos, chairman of the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Foundation, said the project aims to re-establish the sea route between Lanyu and Batanes, allowing shared languages and cultures to continue being passed on.
  • Measuring 12 meters, the 'Golden Friendship' canoe carries 60 rowers in relays across the 185-kilometer Bashi Channel, supported by seven escort vessels providing logistical aid.
  • "Nowadays we have modern vessels accompanying us and sailing together with us, so we are not afraid," said Hsieh Hsiu-hsiung, a diving instructor aboard the canoe.
  • Upon arriving at the Batanes Islands, the crew plans cultural sharing activities; Maraos hopes Ivatan islanders will row the vessel back to Orchid Island next year to boost maritime culture.
