Origin Energy has given new signs that Australia’s largest coal power plant will continue to operate beyond its current closing date in August 2027, stating that there are “many scenarios” in which this would be necessary. The 2.88 GW Eraring coal plant, located on the central coast of New South Wales (NSW), was scheduled to close in August 2025, according to an accelerated schedule announced for the first time in 2022.
