Australian Man Charged with Murder After Thai Girl's Body Found in Suitcase
Police say the 45-year-old suspect confessed after a dispute over 1,000 baht and faces murder and body-concealment charges.
On Friday, Thai police arrested Australian Simon Peter Carman at Suvarnabhumi Airport as he prepared to board a flight, following the discovery of 17-year-old Tunchanok Donhomla's body in a suitcase near Pattaya.
CCTV footage captured Carman carrying a suitcase to a motorcycle after police allege he picked up Tunchanok from Beach Road in Pattaya early Thursday, leading to charges of murder, body concealment, and taking a minor for sexual purposes.
According to police colonel Anek Srathongyoo, Carman confessed to killing Tunchanok following an argument over money, claiming she "used a knife to threaten him," after he offered 500 baht instead of the agreed 1,000 baht.
Carman remains detained in Pattaya Prison facing potential life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted, while Tunchanok's father Thongchai Donhomla stated he wants the suspect to face full consequences of the law.
George Washington University professor Ronald Weitzer notes that such murders remain unusual in the sex tourism industry, even as areas like Pattaya experience shifting demographic trends among visitors in recent years.
