Australian fugitive Dezi Freeman shot dead by police, reports say
Police said the 1 million Australian dollar reward and a three-hour standoff helped end one of the country’s largest manhunts.
- Desmond Freeman was shot dead by police at a rural property in northeast Victoria after a six-month manhunt following the killing of two officers in August.
- Freeman allegedly killed Detective Neal Thompson and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart-Hottart during a search warrant execution, and a third officer was seriously injured.
- The extensive search involved over 450 Victoria Police officers, Australian Defence Force personnel, Australian Federal Police, and other agencies, using technology and searching more than 100 properties, with a $1 million reward offered.
- Police confirmed no officers were injured during the shooting of Freeman, who was found in a shipping container during a standoff and refused to surrender; the State Coroner is investigating this incident along with the original shooting.
