Australia selects Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries for $6.5B warship deal
AUSTRALIA, AUG 5 – The $10 billion AUD contract will double Australia's surface combat fleet and enhance long-range strike capabilities with stealthy frigates built in Japan and Western Australia.
- On Tuesday, Defence Minister Richard Marles awarded the contract for Australia to acquire 11 Mogami-class frigates from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in a $10 billion deal over ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.
- Australia aims to expand its warship fleet from 11 to 26 over the next decade, following a 2023 military restructuring focused on long-range strike capabilities.
- According to military officials, Mogami-class frigates can launch long-range missiles, operate with 90 personnel, and have a range of 10,000 nautical miles, compared to Anzac-class vessels.
- The deal deepens strategic ties between Australia and Japan, and it secures a pipeline of shipbuilding work in Western Australia, with eight ships built domestically.
- Negotiations will begin this year, with signing expected in 2026, and the first ship due in 2029 for service in 2030, said Australian and Japanese officials.
