Aurora officer indicted on murder charge in 2025 fatal shooting
The officer could face second-degree murder charges after body-camera video showed the fatal shooting of Rajon Belt-Stubblefield, attorneys said.
On Monday, an 18th Judicial District grand jury indicted Aurora Police Officer Matthew Neely on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter for the August 30, 2025, fatal shooting of Rajon Belt-Stubblefield.
Following an attempted traffic stop, Neely approached Belt-Stubblefield, who discarded a handgun before advancing toward the officer for roughly 50 feet while Neely fired three shots.
Neely surrendered on an arrest warrant issued last Friday and was released after posting a $200,000 bond. Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain said the department 'respects the judicial process.'
Defense attorney Carrie Slinkard expressed disappointment, stating the grand jury proceeding was 'conducted in secret' with no defense opportunity to present evidence. Ben Crump, representing the family, has called the shooting 'unjustifiable.'
The Aurora Police Department remains under a court-ordered consent decree following past misconduct, while Belt-Stubblefield's family is suing the City of Aurora for at least $20 million in damages.
