Canucks Hiring Manny Malhotra Just Made NHL Draft Harder for Vancouver
Malhotra says the rebuild will hinge on clear accountability, daily improvement and stronger communication with a young roster.
On Thursday, General Manager Ryan Johnson introduced Manny Malhotra as the Vancouver Canucks' 23rd head coach in franchise history. The 46-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., takes over the rebuilding squad after the team finished last in the NHL.
Malhotra replaces Adam Foote, who was fired after the Canucks finished with a 25-49-8 record. The club surrendered the most goals this season and set franchise futility records with an 11-game losing streak.
Energy and body language will set the daily tone, he stressed. "Teams use the same lingo about competing and holding each other accountable and here it will be a very clear definition of what it means," Malhotra said.
With his son Caleb Malhotra eligible for the NHL Draft later this month, the coach faces a unique challenge managing family dynamics. The family maintains a strict rule separating 'dad' and 'coach' roles to maintain professional boundaries.
Previously, Malhotra coached the Abbotsford Canucks, the American Hockey League squad, to a Calder Cup championship in the 2024-2025 season. This experience developing prospects positions him to rebuild Vancouver's young roster.
