At least 12 dead and dozens missing after a vessel capsized in eastern Congo’s Lake Kivu
About 15 people were rescued after the vessel carrying traders and goods capsized, while authorities said the cause was not immediately clear.
A vessel carrying more than 50 people capsized on Saturday night in Lake Kivu, South Kivu, killing at least 12 and leaving dozens missing, authorities reported. The incident occurred in Idjwi territory.
Congo's vessels often carry excessive cargo and passengers, with many travelers failing to wear life jackets despite safety mandates. Dorcelle Bagazane, a member of civil society in Idjwi, said many people continue to travel without them.
About 15 people were rescued following the capsizing, according to Habiragi, chief of the village of Kisheke. Videos from the scene showed villagers and other passengers pulling bodies from the lake.
The vessel was transporting fish traders and goods from Bwina to Boza on Idjwi Island, per local administrator Muhindo Ntambuka Pascal. Christian Amini Ndahira, a resident of Ijwi, said he lost a friend on the boat.
Deadly boat accidents are common in Congo, where rivers and lakes serve as a major means of transport for more than 100 million people. Persistent infrastructure gaps threaten communities relying on waterborne travel.
