Aston Villa Hit by Leon Goretzka Injury Blow
Leon Goretzka’s debut is delayed as Aston Villa said the 31-year-old needs time to recover from a knee injury and rebuild fitness.
Aston Villa midfielder Leon Goretzka has been ruled out until after the international break following a fitness setback. The 31-year-old joined from Bayern Munich on a free transfer last month.
Goretzka posted on social media: "Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch. But I need this short break to come back at full strength." The midfielder cited recovery needs.
Pending full recovery, the Germany international could make his debut against Brentford on October 10. He must wait until October to make his Villa bow after the three-week international break concludes.
Villa visit Club Brugge in the Champions League on Tuesday before hosting Nottingham Forest at Villa Park. Matches against Tottenham and Coventry precede the three-week international break.
Winless through three Premier League games, Villa faces fixture pressure without Goretzka. Midfielder Joao Gomes is available after his debut red card, while Ibrahim Mbaye could feature in the Champions League fixture.
