Monsoon Paradox: Why Assam Flooded Despite a 29% Rainfall Deficit

- On Wednesday, the death toll in Assam floods reached 78 with three new fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. Over 3 lakh people remain affected by the deluge across seven districts.
- Charaideo remains the worst-hit district with 1,37,561 people impacted among 551 affected villages across the state. More than 16,500 displaced people shelter in 71 relief camps while 30 distribution centres serve over 72,000 residents.
- A crop area of 21,523.08 hectares remains submerged across the state, with 11,000 animals washed away and another 17,000 affected. Infrastructure damage includes roads, schools, houses, and embankments reported from various districts.
- The India Meteorological Department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall through August 1 in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. Officials issued an "orange alert" for Tinsukia, Mon, Mokokchung, and Wokha districts.
- District authorities and the Assam State Disaster Management Authority are closely monitoring the situation with emergency response systems on alert. The ASDMA urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
