Asian Football Confederation boss says governing body will back FIFA President Infantino's re-election bid
Sheikh Salman said the AFC’s 47 members could be decisive as Infantino seeks a fourth term and opposition candidates face a Nov. 18 filing deadline.
- On Friday, Asian Football Confederation President Sheikh Salman announced the body is endorsing FIFA President Gianni Infantino for a fourth term during the AFC's congress in Tokyo.
- The Asian Football Confederation comprises 47 member confederations whose votes could prove decisive in securing another mandate for the incumbent, with Sheikh Salman emphasizing unified support.
- "We reaffirm our full commitment, of course, to supporting you and your leadership as you seek a new mandate as FIFA President," Sheikh Salman stated, citing Infantino's visits across Asia.
- Prospective candidates challenging the incumbent FIFA President face a filing deadline of November 18 ahead of the March election that will determine a fourth term.
- Sheikh Salman's public support positions the AFC as a key bloc for the upcoming vote, though not all 47 member confederations are guaranteed to follow the directive.
