German Police Probe Arson Attack on Wuppertal Synagogue
Prosecutors say the suspect made comments indicating an antisemitic motive after allegedly throwing three containers of flammable liquid at the synagogue entrance.
The man detained shortly after allegedly trying to set fire to Wuppertal's synagogue made antisemitic comments to the arresting officers, prosecutors say. The 37-year-old Afghan citizen also had knives in his apartment.
In the middle of a broad day, the Bergisches Synagogue in Wuppertal burns. Members of the Jewish community can extinguish the flames before people are injured or more harm is caused. A little later, a police-known 37-year-old Afghane is in police custody – in the meantime, a warrant has been issued against him for attempted serious arson.
