The ambush by an ISIS-affiliated gunman killed two Iowa National Guard soldiers and a U.S. civilian interpreter, wounding three others during counterterrorism efforts in Syria.
- On Monday, the Army identified Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, 29, of Marshalltown as the two Americans killed Saturday in Palmyra, Syria during an ambush.
- During a key leader engagement, a lone gunman believed to be part of ISIS opened fire at the military post at Palmyra entrance, and U.S. Central Command said the attacker was engaged and killed.
- The Army reported three wounded Iowa National Guard soldiers, with two medevaced and stable, one treated locally, and a U.S. civilian interpreter killed; all were assigned to the 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division.
- State officials announced that Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered flags at half-staff and said, `Kevin and I offer our prayers and condolences to their families and ask that Iowans stand united in support of them during this difficult time`.
- These deaths mark the first U.S. troop fatalities in Syria since the overthrow of Bashar Assad last year amid Operation Inherent Resolve, where hundreds of U.S. forces and about 200 to 250 Iowa National Guard members are deployed.
