Armed group kidnaps 39 people during peace talks in northeastern Nigeria
Gunmen abducted 39 people during a meeting with a bandit leader's family in northwest Nigeria, police said on Monday.
The abduction occurred when a suspected kidnap kingpin arrived at a reconciliation meeting of 47 residents and took most of them hostage, said police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar.
The mass kidnapping happened Sunday in Magamin Diddi community, Maradun area, Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria.
Northern Nigerian communities often negotiate with armed groups due to insecurity and lack of military protection amid a complex crisis of insurgency and kidnappings.
