Armed Forces Week: A nation’s duty to those who have served
Help for Heroes says support helped Mapp return to elite sport after a 2009 Afghanistan blast and reach top three in the world.
Armed Forces Week, running from Monday, June 22 to Sunday, June 28, celebrates military dedication while highlighting the recovery of Corie Mapp, a former British Army soldier who served in the Household Cavalry.
Corie's career changed in 2009 while on duty in Afghanistan, where his vehicle hit a roadside bomb, resulting in life-changing injuries that left him struggling to adjust.
A visit from his daughters proved pivotal for Corie, who recalled, "That kick-started whatever engine is inside me. I got up the next morning and sent for the physio."
With support, Corie transitioned into elite sports, competing in Para Bobsleigh at World Cups and the Invictus Games, achieving top-three world rankings since 2015.
Beyond Corie's achievements, this week underscores the public's duty to support Armed Forces veterans transitioning from service, whether finding fulfilling employment or managing civilian life challenges.
