Colombia arrests 217 suspected members of top drug cartel
- Colombian authorities arrested 217 suspected members of the Gulf Clan drug cartel between April 15 and early May 2025 across various regions of the country.
- The arrests followed a surge in violence attributed to the Gulf Clan's 'pistol plan', a strategy aimed at systematically killing police and soldiers, escalating tensions since peace talks were suspended in early 2023.
- The Gulf Clan, originating from 1990s right-wing paramilitary groups, controls cocaine trafficking, illegal gold mining, migrant smuggling, and racketeering, with about 7,500 members funding paramilitary activities through drug profits.
- During raids linked to the arrests, authorities recovered 6.8 metric tons of narcotics, seized 123 weapons, and confiscated upwards of 15,000 rounds of ammunition. In related clashes, 15 suspected traffickers were killed, including cartel commander José Miguel Demoya Hernández, also known as "Chirimoya."
- The arrests occur amid Colombia's worst violence since the 2016 FARC peace deal, pressuring President Petro’s administration to intensify its offensive against the Gulf Clan and reassess its 'total peace' policy engaging armed groups.
