Teenage Girl Killed by Neglected Dog Pack After Attempting to Feed Them
Fifteen-Year-Old Makayla Fortner died on Wednesday in Alexander, Arkansas, after being fatally attacked by a neglected pack of dogs on a residential property.
Fortner and her mother had been trying to care for and feed about 30 to 40 malnourished dogs that neighbors said were uncontrolled and had caused multiple complaints to county officials.
A Saline County deputy arrived at the scene and fired his pistol into the ground twice to disperse the aggressive dogs, which were subsequently seized and euthanized by Benton City officials who removed 14 animals from the property.
Fundraisers created by family friend Erin Bowman have raised over $27,000 toward a $45,000 goal to assist with funerals and memorials, while tributes recall Fortner as a deeply loved girl whose smile could light up a room.
The Saline County Sheriff’s Office and Benton animal control continue investigating the incident amid community frustration over the lack of county animal control and claims that earlier intervention might have prevented this tragic death.
