Lando Norris Under Fire From Government Official and Football Icon
Norris urged a one-race ban for Franco Colapinto after the safety-car crash, while Alpine and the FIA moved to curb online abuse.
On Saturday at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Lando Norris was eliminated in a multi-car collision involving Franco Colapinto. Following the incident, Norris called for the Argentine driver to face a race ban, stating he "shouldn't be in F1."
Norris's comments triggered widespread backlash from Argentine fans and officials, including Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno and former football star Sergio Aguero. The online abuse continued a pattern previously observed following a Gasly-Colapinto controversy in Madrid.
Colapinto received a 10-second penalty converted to a five-place grid drop for the Baku incident, while Alpine condemned the "fresh online abuse" directed at their driver and the wider Formula 1 community.
Former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers advised Norris to avoid Instagram, suggesting the driver went too far in his criticism despite acknowledging that online abuse remains unacceptable.
Alpine executive advisor Flavio Briatore is weighing what "action" to take in the aftermath of Baku as the team prepares for this week's Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
