Argentina economic activity dips 1.4% in July
Wholesale and manufacturing led the decline as seven of 15 sectors grew, but economists said the data still point to a volatile recovery.
- On Thursday, Argentina's official statistics agency INDEC reported that economic activity fell 1.4% in July compared to the same month last year, marking a significant downturn for Latin America's third-largest economy.
- Seasonally adjusted figures show a 2.9% drop in July from June, the largest monthly fall since the Covid-19 pandemic, reflecting an erratic pattern of alternating monthly corrections and recoveries throughout 2026.
- While the fishing sector surged 425.5%, eight of 15 sectors tracked by INDEC recorded year-on-year declines, led by wholesale and retail trade falling 5.1% and manufacturing dropping 4.6%.
- Economist Facundo Beltramone of the Libertad think tank characterized the official data as showing "a sign of weakness at the margin," warning figures must be viewed within a trajectory of considerable volatility.
- The government's Budget bill predicts 4.5 percent growth this year, while experts in the Central Bank's REM survey forecast 2.1 percent for 2026, 2.9 percent in 2027, and 3.0 percent in 2028.
