Arafura Rare Earths Mine Gets Green Light to Challenge China's Dominance
The project is expected to supply 5% of global rare earth demand by 2029 and add construction jobs in the Northern Territory.
- On Thursday, Arafura Rare Earths announced the final investment decision for its Nolans Project, located 135 kilometres north of Alice Springs, after securing support from the federal Critical Minerals Strategic Reserve.
- China currently refines as much as 90 per cent of global rare earths production, creating a supply stranglehold. Arafura aims to provide a viable alternative source, breaking dependence on market conditions controlled by a single entity.
- As Australia's first fully integrated ore-to-oxide operation, Nolans will create 600 jobs during construction and sustain 350 permanent positions. The Federal Government invested about $140 million in equity and committed up to $700 million in debt financing.
- Central to a deal between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and President Donald Trump, the project strengthens Western supply chains. Managing director Darryl Cuzzubbo told the ABC Country Hour the announcement was "the starting line" and production was several years away.
- Arafura has secured offtake agreements with international partners including Hyundai, Kia, and Siemens. This diversification effort aims to break Chinese control of rare earths pricing, essential for renewable energy and defense technologies.
