Apple Music to slap AI labels on Suno tracks – but pushes the onus onto record companies

  • On Thursday, Aug. 20, Apple Music announced plans to introduce "Made With AI" labels for songs where a material portion of content uses generative AI, with the visible tags rolling out later this year.
  • This initiative expands upon March's introduction of Transparency Tags, a system designed to alert listeners to AI usage, following recent calls from major labels to prohibit AI-generated content from global music charts.
  • Apple Music vice president Oliver Schusser disclosed that more than a third of monthly uploads were "100% AI," stating that providers must "take responsibility" for disclosing AI usage as they know how content was created.
  • Record labels and distributors are now required to tag tracks where a material portion of content involved generative AI, with Apple Music emphasizing these partners are crucial to implementing the labels effectively.
  • Spotify and Tidal have already implemented similar labeling programs for AI-generated profiles and music, while industry groups including the RIAA and IFPI continue advocating for standardized labeling across streaming platforms.
