Apple leaks foldable iPhone references in iOS 27 beta
Apple released the first iOS 27 developer beta today, containing code references that point directly to foldable hardware. The references were not present in iOS 26.
Technology observer Sam Henri Gold discovered framework strings "foldState" and "angleDegrees" within iOS 27's code, signaling foldable hardware capabilities. A new check for built-in display count was also identified.
During the Platforms State of the Union, Apple told Developers to move away from fixed orientations and instead target "a dynamic range of sizes and aspect ratios." This guidance supports hardware capable of reflowing across varying form factors.
Expectations point to an "iPhone Ultra" announcement in September 2026 alongside iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, featuring a roughly 7.8-inch inner display and 5.5-inch cover screen. Pricing starts at over $2,000.
Rumors suggest the foldable device will integrate an A20 chip, a Liquid Metal hinge, and Touch ID instead of Face ID. Other rumored features include a titanium frame and dual rear cameras.
