Apple is developing first touch-screen MacBook Pro: report

Apple will introduce OLED touchscreens and reinforced hinges in its high-end MacBook Pro with M6 chip, targeting a 2027 release to address previous touchscreen challenges.

  • Earlier this week, Apple unveiled the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports it is developing a high-end touchscreen MacBook Pro.
  • Apple long resisted laptop touchscreens, with founder Steve Jobs opposing vertical touch surfaces before his passing, while the company experimented with the Touch Bar from 2016 until its retirement in 2023.
  • Gurman says the new model will use OLED touchscreen panels, feature a hole-punch design replacing the notch, reinforced hinges to prevent bounce, and M6-series processors.
  • Apple plans to price the touchscreen MacBook Pro about a few hundred dollars higher than the current 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro, which retails for $1,999, with M5 Pro and M5 Max updates expected early next year.
  • Gurman says supply constraints pushed the launch back from late 2025 due to OLED supply issues, and Apple is also updating MacBook Air, Mac Studio, Mac Mini and two monitors.
