Four Years Later, Apple Bends to India's Demands over Card Payments

Apple is rolling out Visa and Mastercard support again after India’s payments rules forced a four-year pause in card billing.

  • Apple has resumed support for credit and debit card payments for App Store and iCloud transactions in India, ending a four-year hiatus and allowing users to link Visa and Mastercard to their Apple Account.
  • In May 2022, the Reserve Bank of India implemented stricter recurring payment mandates that prompted the company to suspend card payments; the framework required merchants to register fresh e-mandates and implement additional authentication for every charge.
  • To comply with these regulatory requirements, Apple has updated its backend infrastructure to support tokenized card credentials; users must now authenticate transactions using their CVV and a one-time password .
  • Restoring card payments solves a significant friction point for subscription renewals, according to Tarun Pathak, research director at Counterpoint Research, while UPI and net banking remain available for the expanding user base.
  • Similar regulatory pressures regarding app distribution and payments have reshaped operations in Europe, Japan, and South Korea, highlighting Apple's broader challenge in navigating country-specific rules globally.
