Anthropic warns that it's very close to RSI capability, aka self-building AI
Anthropic said AI use in research could speed model progress faster than safety controls can keep up, and it may soon meet its RSI threshold.
On Monday, Anthropic added a new warning to the Risk Factors section of its S-1A filing, stating it may imminently meet its internal definition of RSI, termed "dramatically accelerated progress attributable to AI."
The Responsible Scaling Policy outlines plans to monitor risks as Anthropic approaches "recursive self-improvement." While once viewed as a buzzword, the company claims internal estimates indicate upcoming models could trigger this threshold.
Anthropic acknowledged it has already used AI to develop new models with capability leaps it did not recognize at the time. Nevertheless, Claude's capabilities in coding, math, and cybersecurity have grown in leaps and bounds this year.
Despite these warnings, Anthropic stated no current models have crossed the RSI threshold. The company promises to keep humans in the R&D process while exploring unconventional ways to achieve unprecedented levels of security.
Skeptics note that an S-1A functions as both disclosure and marketing. As TechCrunch reported, the update serves as a warning for investors regarding the safety risks of using AI to build more capable AI systems.
