- Some 950 Claude-powered software agents combed through a database of DNA sequences for 21 hours, identifying 20 candidates from more than 200,000 genes—work that would typically require weeks of laboratory effort.
- Beside the enzyme's gene sits a long array of repeating DNA, a structure resembling 'clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats,' the natural defense system known as CRISPR used to modify organisms.
- Feng Zhang, a CRISPR pioneer and professor at MIT and the Broad Institute, called the findings 'genuinely intriguing' and said they 'merit further investigation,' though the results remain preliminary and unpeer-reviewed.
- Anthropic dubbed the newly identified system ART, and Amodei stated the finding is 'preliminary' but could lead to AI autonomously controlling lab equipment to accelerate drug discovery in the near future.
