Lipowitz Breaks Collarbone in Tour De France Crash
Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe said the 25-year-old was fifth overall before crashing on a corner about 6 km from the finish.
- On Tuesday, German rider Florian Lipowitz crashed out of the Tour de France, breaking his collarbone during the 16th stage time-trial near Thonon-les-Bains. Sitting fifth overall, he retired from the race.
- Two days earlier, two-time former champion Jonas Vingegaard also suffered a broken collarbone during a crash on the 15th stage. The Tour has seen multiple podium contenders forced to abandon following severe accidents.
- Lipowitz was performing well, sitting fourth at intermediate time-checks before crashing around 6km from the finish. The 25-year-old was competing in the 26.1km time-trial along the shores of Lake Geneva.
- Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe announced the retirement, calling it a "bitter and far too early end." Remco Evenepoel, who won the stage, described his victory as "a bittersweet pill to swallow" regarding his teammate.
- Reigning champion and race leader Tadej Pogacar expressed sympathy for the departing rider after the stage. "I'm sad to see him leave the Tour," Pogacar said, wishing him a fast recovery.
