Vermont Man Enters Plea After Being Accused of Shooting, Dragging Live Pig Behind ATV in Eden
LAMOILLE COUNTY, VERMONT, JUL 16 – Matthew Hill, Eden constable and farmer, faces felony charges for causing undue pain to a pig by shooting and dragging it nearly two miles, officials said.
- On July 14 in Eden, Vermont, Matthew Hill allegedly shot one of his pigs multiple times and dragged the still-alive animal behind his ATV for nearly two miles, triggering felony charges.
- Aggravated animal cruelty charges allege Hill caused undue pain and torture, and Lamoille County State’s Attorney Aliena Gerhard said, `I would expect that you kill an animal humanely, especially as a farmer who has had pigs for a long time.`
- Game wardens reviewed video showing the pig struggling while being dragged, authorities said, and `While it was very loudly screaming in pain and trying to get loose-- the neighbors could hear it,` Lamoille County State’s Attorney Aliena Gerhard added.
- In Eden, a judge released Hill on conditions requiring wardens and a state veterinarian to assess his remaining pigs, and he entered a not guilty plea through his attorney.
- Next month, Hill must appear in court on August 13, 2025, facing potential prison terms of up to five years on each count.
