NASA Astronaut Anil Menon

He will study microgravity’s effects on astronauts and test tools that could reduce Earth-based medical support on future missions.

  • On Tuesday, NASA astronaut Anil Menon began an eight-month mission to the International Space Station, launching from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan aboard the Roscosmos Soyuz MS-29.
  • As a flight engineer, Menon joins Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina; the trio will join the Expedition 74 crew aboard the ISS to begin their scheduled research.
  • A native of Minneapolis, Menon is an emergency medicine physician and United States Space Force colonel who served as SpaceX's first flight surgeon, "helping to launch its first humans to space during the Demo-2 mission and building a medical organization to support the human system during future missions," NASA said.
  • During his stay, Menon will conduct ultrasound studies using augmented reality to "improve the understanding of the aging process to advance therapeutic developments," with research "aimed at advancing human space exploration and benefiting life on Earth," NASA said.
  • Before returning to Earth, the crew will participate in Expeditions 74 and 75, while Menon will test technology for producing intravenous fluids to support future deep-space missions to the Moon and Mars.
