UK Heading for ‘Poisonous’ Politics of the US, Andy Burnham Says
Burnham also pledged a 45-day work placement for all 16- to 18-year-olds and a major expansion of apprenticeships.
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham warned on Saturday that the UK is veering toward the "poisonous politics of the US" under Sir Keir Starmer's current Labour leadership.
Burnham, seeking to return to Westminster in Thursday's Makerfield by-election, has made no secret of his Labour leadership ambitions while criticizing Starmer's direction.
During the campaign, Burnham pledged a "massive expansion of apprenticeships" and a guaranteed 45-day work placement for all 16 to 18-year-olds.
He also argued the Government must adjust defence spending assumptions, stating he would not be "squeamish" about reducing the welfare bill to fund the Dip.
The contest, a race between Burnham and Reform candidate Robert Kenyon, follows recent ministerial resignations over the Government's long-delayed defence investment plan.
