The Democratic Republic of Vietnam was established on September 2, 1945. It wasn't until June 30, 1946, nearly 8,000 km away from their homeland, that the Vietnamese community in New Hebrides (now Vanuatu) received the news. In the town of Port Vila, the Vietnamese flag was raised for the first time with great solemnity, alongside the British and French flags, amidst the joyful cheers of those who had served as laborers.
