Ancient Roman fresco and mosaic featuring maritime city unveiled at newly restored Baths of Trajan
The restored works include a 15-meter mosaic and a 1st-century fresco, and officials are testing limited public access before wider openings.
- On Tuesday, Mayor Robert Gualtieri unveiled the recently restored Painted City fresco and Great Mosaic, discovered in an underground gallery during 1990s excavations of the Baths of Trajan on the Oppio hill near the Colosseum.
- Dedicated by Emperor Trajan in 109 AD, the Baths of Trajan originally extended over six hectares and incorporated the Domus Aurea, optimizing thermal experiences for users at the world's largest bath complex.
- Cultural superintendent Claudio Parisi Presicce described the fresco as depicting a well-preserved port city with buildings, theater, and temple, while the Great Mosaic measures 15 meters high with intricate columns and figures across four levels.
- Authorities are opening the works to the public for the first time this month, initially limiting visits to small groups of 15 during a trial weekend period to assess visitor impacts.
- The trial aims to determine how the delicate works respond to increased humidity and climatic impacts before authorities allow more general access to the historic complex.
