ANC expects Gigaba to step aside after Transnet scandal charges hit court

Malusi Gigaba faces charges linked to rigged Transnet locomotive tenders and alleged corrupt payments from the Gupta family during 2010–2014, involving multi-billion rand losses.

  • On Monday, the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption updated the charge sheet at the Palm Ridge Specialised Commercial Crime Court, Johannesburg, formally adding Malusi Gigaba as the fifth accused in the Transnet corruption case.
  • The State alleges that while Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba accepted undisclosed cash payments from the Gupta family and flouted tender rules for three irregular Transnet locomotive contracts.
  • The case names several former Transnet chiefs and private firms, with Gigaba charged alongside Anoj Singh, Brian Molefe, Siyabonga Gama and Thamsanqa Jiyane on fraud and corruption counts.
  • The matter was postponed to 30 January 2026 for docket disclosure, indictment, and high court transfer; IDAC said Malusi Gigaba voluntarily appeared after a 7 November summons and is cooperating.
  • The allegations first surfaced during the Zondo Commission into state capture, highlighting governance and transparency concerns in South Africa's state-owned enterprises and rail modernisation projects.
