Anand announces $35M to boost Caribbean security, tackle Haiti’s gang crisis
Most of the money will support Haiti’s police and anti-gang efforts, while smaller amounts will aid Jamaica’s hurricane recovery and Colombia’s peace process.
On Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand announced $35 million in new funding to bolster security and curb violence across the Caribbean, specifically targeting Haiti's ongoing gang crisis.
Armed gangs have controlled much of Haiti since 2021, disrupting critical infrastructure and food production while creating a humanitarian crisis that pressures Washington to manage asylum surges.
The $35 million investment includes $7.5 million for the Haitian National Police to combat gangs, $6.8 million to improve regional drug trafficking policing, and $10 million for a new drug trafficking task force.
While attending Organization of American States meetings in Panama, Anand also confirmed Canada ratified a 1994 convention on gender-based violence, setting obligations for preventing and punishing violence against women.
Canada also continues advocating for better climate change financing for Caribbean states hit by severe weather, while simultaneously trying to secure a trade deal with the Mercosur bloc.
Foreign Minister Anita Anand announced on Tuesday a new allocation of $35 million for projects to strengthen security and combat violence in the Caribbean.
