Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Navy Says Oil Tanker Struck Mine in Strait of Hormuz
The IRGC Navy said the tanker’s engine room was hit after it entered the waterway with its navigation system switched off, and it was the third such case since Saturday.
- On August 3, 2026, an oil tanker struck a mine in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering an explosion in its engine room, according to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. The supertanker was capable of carrying around 2 million barrels of oil.
- Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, accused CENTCOM head Admiral Brad Cooper of orchestrating oil-smuggling operations using United Arab Emirates military assets to transfer crude through the waterway.
- Iranian forces have been striking five or six vessels nightly over the past two or three months, while the IRGC Navy warned that vessels transiting with navigation systems off will be classified as "hostile vessels."
- Rezaei rejected President Donald Trump's assertion that the Strait of Hormuz is open, insisting Iran remains in control while maritime traffic remains far below prewar levels.
- If war breaks out, Iran would target US-linked technology infrastructure, Rezaei warned, claiming cables and data centers worth more than $2 trillion would be destroyed.
